Gov't Mule
Mountain Jam – Night 1
06.03.06
Hunter NY
Mountain Jam got off to a cold and wet start, but the show opener Mr.
Man was the Perfect Shelter from the elements. There was a storm About
To Rage, and it was Gov't Mule. Andy's bass playing on
Thorazine Shuffle got more than one pair of feet un-entrenched from the
pervasive mud and the set closer, Turn On Your Lovelight featured a
good friend, Robert Randolph who sat in after having played a
fantastic set with The Family Band just before the Mule took the stage.
The Second Set let everybody know from the get-go that this was to be
no ordinary show. Machan and Elaine Caswell graced the stage with soul
filled, powerful backing vocals on The Letter. One of the new songs, Brand New
Angel, followed and was followed itself by Matt's drum solo. The girls
returned to add their unique flavor to A Million Miles From Yesterday,
then the band played a beautiful rendition of Patchwork Quilt. Machan and Elaine Caswell did return for the set closer, Soulshine, which has never sounded so good. The first encore song was
A Million Miles From Yesterday, which was played for a second time
because the whole show was being filmed for possible release. Lola Leave Your Light On ran into
Livin' Lovin' Maid and left no doubt that this band plays the hard
rockin' blues as well as they can be played. The band returned again
for a second encore, this time with Daniel Sproul of Rose Hill Drive
for Neil Young's classic, Cortez The Killer. Time to rest up for day
two!
